The actual point where the equinoctial line divides the northern and southern hemispheres is located in Ecuador, a beautiful and diverse country that is covered by beauty from the famous Galápagos Islands to the Amazonian jungle, from Pacific beaches to snow-covered volcanoes. Ecuador is a biodiversity heaven full of culture, history and fun. Although Ecuador is a small country almost the size of Arizona, it's got different regions. Ecuador is very diverse - you can drive four hours and go from a warm beach to a snow-covered mountain, drive for another 4 hours and you could probably reach an Amazon rain forest. Just like rest of South America, the seasons in Ecuador are the opposite from the seasons in the northern hemisphere, therefore beach season starts in December and ends in March.
Whilst most people have heard of the famous Galapagos Islands and perhaps Ecuador´s capital Quito, much of the country is still relatively unvisited. Ecuador´s small size means that it is technically possible to have breakfast in the Amazon Rainforest, lunch in the high Andes and dinner overlooking the Pacific Ocean.Located on the Pacific coast, Guayaquil is the main port of Ecuador. If you are planning to visit Ecuador, then consider visiting some popular places which are of tourist interest. One of the impressive natural features of Ecuador is the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" which runs south of Quito between the two main Cordillera ranges of the Andes for 325km. It is also Ecuador´s highest peak.
Cotopaxi whilst not as high as Chimborazo at 5,897m is climbed more often probably due to its claim of being the world´s highest active volcano. Aside from Chimborazo and Cotopaxi, more climbing can be done at Cayambe and also Antisana, the third and fourth highest peaks in Ecuador respectively. In addition to the impressive volcanoes there are numerous places to visit along the Andes of Ecuador. Quito is one of the world´s highest capitals at 2,830m and has an impressive colonial centre. The impressive Inca site of Ingapirca is one a few pre-colonial fortifications found in Ecuador. Colonial Cuenca is the country´s third biggest city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a beautiful cultural centre.
